The Therapeutic Benefits of
Salt Therapy
For many years salt has been understood to have excellent healing properties. The salt caves of eastern and central Europe have been used for over 150 years to help respiratory conditions. There have been many research articles published in prestigious medical journals which highlight the benefit of salt therapy.
At Benalla Salt Therapy, we utilise the best quality halo (salt) technology, using only pharmaceutical salt from the pristine salt deposits of New Zealand. Pharmaceutical salt is pure NACL, the same salt used to make saline solution for intravenous use. Pharmaceutical salt is different to Himalayan salt and table salt, both of which contain impurities and other minerals.
Premium New Zealand salt
The Process
Our salt therapy system grinds dried pharmaceutical salt to the correct micron size of .3 microns. The fine salt powder is then distributed evenly throughout our rooms, which are a specific size, enabling the optimum concentration of salt.
How our system works
The Benefits
Our salt generator provides the room with dry pharmaceutical salt aerosol at a specific concentration within a specific humidity range, which allows the pharmaceutical salt to permeate the lungs as you breathe and cover exposed skin.
What is the mechanism behind
Salt’s Therapeutic Benefit?
Our salt generators (Halo-generators) disperse pure salt particles at .3 microns into the air, which lands on your skin and you also breathe deep into the alveoli of your lungs. Salt is a natural antihistamine which calms irritated mucosal tissue. The Salt has natural anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. When inhaled, the salt helps break up the mucus lining of your respiratory tract and lungs, enabling it to be dislodged and expelled.
Having your skin exposed to fine pharmaceutical salt particles can increase the good bacteria on your skin, which makes up the skin’s natural flora. The salt is also anti-inflammatory in nature, which helps soothe irritated skin in conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
Health conditions which may be helped with salt therapy include but are not limited to:
Lungs
Asthma is a respiratory condition where spasms in the bronchi of the lungs cause difficulty in breathing and cause the airways to narrow and swell causing extra mucus to form and thereby making breathing difficult.
The symptoms include:
- breathlessness
- wheezing
- tight feeling in the chest
- continuing cough
Salt Therapy can assist Asthma sufferers by allowing them to breathe in microscopic particles of pharmaceutical salt deep into their lungs. The salt particles assist in reducing the inflammation and congestion of the mucosal lining of the airways providing relief from coughing, wheezing and general tightness across the chest. The warm environment of the salt therapy rooms also provides relief from allergens that cause irritation to the airways.
Bronchiectasis is where there is damage to the walls of the bronchial tubes and there is loss of the smooth muscle and elasticity of segments of the bronchi. This distortion to the airway prevents secretions from being adequately cleared from the lungs.
Symptoms:
- Ongoing cough
- Increased mucous (sputum) and phlegm production
- Repeated lung infections
- Bloody sputum
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
- Wheezing
- Weakness
- Fatigue
- Sinusitis
How does Salt Therapy assist Bronchiectasis?
Salt Therapy can assist Bronchiectasis by salt particles reducing the airway inflammation and congestion. The salt molecules attach to the cilia fibers via inhalation providing relief to excessive mucous.
Bronchiolitis is a lung infection common in young children and infants which causes congestion and inflammation in the bronchioles (small airways) of the lung.
Symptoms:
- Runny nose
- Stuffy nose
- Cough
- Slight fever (not always present)
- Mild cough
- Fast breathing
- Loss of appetite
How does Salt Therapy assist Bronchiolitis?
Salt Therapy can relieve symptoms by reducing the inflammation and congestion to the bronchiole by lining the walls of the airways providing relief from coughing and wheezing. The warm environment of the salt therapy rooms can also provide relief from allergens that may cause irritation to the airways.
Bronchitis is a condition where the air passages between the nose and the lungs become inflamed. Acute bronchitis can be caused by viral or bacterial infections and generally heal without complications. Chronic bronchitis may a sign of serious lung disease that can be slowed but not usually cured.
Symptoms:
- Cough
- Production of mucus (sputum)
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Slight fever and chills
- Chest discomfort
How Does Salt Therapy Assist Bronchitis?
Salt Therapy can assist Bronchitis through the inhalation of salt particles to reduce inflammation thereby reducing the production of mucous and in turn relieving congestion and reducing the production of mucous. The salt also reduces the production of bacteria and viruses and can aid in healing. Please book private rooms if you are suffering from viral bronchitis until the contagious phase passes.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease affecting the lungs characterised by chronic obstruction of airflow the lungs interfering with normal breathing. COPD is a term that encompasses the diagnosis of ‘chronic bronchitis’ and ’emphysema’, which are no longer used.
Symptoms:
- Shortness of breath
- Wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Having to clear your throat first thing in the morning, due to excess mucus in your lungs
- A chronic cough that may produce mucus
- Blueness of the lips or fingernail beds
- Frequent respiratory infections
- Lack of energy
- Unintended weight loss (in later stages)
- Swelling in ankles, feet or legs
How Does Salt Therapy Assist COPD?
Salt Therapy can assist COPD by reducing inflammation and the production of sputum by coating the cilia fibres with salt, reducing the production of bacteria and inflammation which can reduce wheezing and chest tightness.
The common cold and the flu, while cause by different viruses, are both respiratory illnesses and it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. Typically, a cold is a viral infection that primarily affects the upper respiratory system such as the nose, throat and upper chest.
Symptoms:
- dry, hacking cough.
- moderate to high fever, although not everyone with the flu will run a fever.
- sore throat.
- shaking chills.
- severe muscle or body aches.
- headache.
- stuffy and runny nose.
- severe fatigue that may last up to two weeks
How does Salt Therapy assist Cold & Flu?
Salt Therapy can aid in the healing and recovery of the cold and flu by inhaling salt particles and reducing the production of bacteria. The warm environment can provide relief from allergens that can cause irritation to the airways reducing inflammation. We recommend a private salt room while you are in the influenza contagious stages to prevent spreading.
PLEASE NOTE: SALT THERAPY IS NOT A CURE FOR VIRUSES.
Croup (laryngotracheobronchitis), is a type of respiratory infection usually caused by a virus that leads to swelling inside the trachea, interfering with normal breathing.
Symptoms:
- Difficulties breathing
- Cold symptoms
- Runny nose
- Barking Cough
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Hoarse voice
- Loss of appetite
Salt Therapy can assist with the treatment of Croup through the warm environment which provides relief from allergens that can irritate the airways. The salt inhaled also can reduce inflammation and the production of bacteria and viruses. Please book a private salt room to avoid spread.
Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body affecting the cells that produce mucus, sweat and digestive juices. Normally thin and slippery, these secreted fluids, in people with cystic fibrosis, the defective gene causes the secretions to become sticky and thick clogging up tubes, ducts and passageways, especially in the lungs and pancreas.
Symptoms:
The thick and sticky mucus associated with cystic fibrosis clogs the tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs and increases bacteria and infections, causing signs and symptoms such as:
- A persistent cough that produces thick mucus
- Wheezing
- Breathlessness
- Exercise intolerance
- Repeated lung infections
- Inflamed nasal passages or a stuffy nose
Through Salt Therapy, the Inhalation of the salt particles reduces the inflammation and congestion of the mucosal lining of the airways reducing the production of mucus by coating the cilia fibres with salt allowing the mucous to dry up and be removed.
This can reduce the bacteria reducing lung infections and provide relief from coughing, wheezing and general tightness across the chest.
Emphysema is a chronic lung disease. It is caused by damage to the alveoli which are the tiny air sacs in the lung where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place. This damage results in air becoming trapped, causing them to expand and rupture.
Symptoms:
- Shortness of breath, Wheezing
- Chest tightness or pain
- A chronic cough that won’t go away
- A chronic cough that may produce mucus
Salt Therapy can aid in the treatment of Emphysema as the warm environment provides relief from allergens that can cause irritation to the airways. Microscopic particles are inhaled deep into the chest which can reduce the inflammation and congestion of the mucosal lining of the airways and the production of sputum by coating the cilia fibres with salt. This can provide relief from coughing, wheezing and general tightness across the chest.
Hay Fever is an allergic response to allergens, such as pollen, dust mites or particles shed by cats, dogs and other animals with fur or feathers.
Symptoms:
- Runny nose and nasal congestion
- Watery, itchy, red eyes (allergic conjunctivitis)
- Nasal congestion
- Sneezing
- Nasal and sinus pressure
- Ear infections or effusions (fluid and inflammation)
- Cough
Salt Therapy can help in the treatment and relief of Hay Fever by providing relief from allergens that cause irritation to the airways through the warm environment and the salt. Salt is a natural antihistamine, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory so inhalation can reduce the inflammation while reducing congestion and provide relief from nasal congestion and pressure.
Pneumonia occurs when the lungs become inflamed and fill up with fluid and a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection occurs.
Symptoms:
The initial symptoms of pneumonia can resemble those of a cold or flu, but develops into a high fever, chills, and cough with sputum. Common symptoms include;
- Cough
- Rusty or green phlegm, coughed up from lungs
- Fever, sweating or shaking chills
- Fast breathing and shortness of breath
- Chest pain that increases when taking a deep breath
- Fatigue, weakness and muscle pain
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
- Headache
- Confusion or delirium, especially in older adults
- Dusky or purplish skin colour, from poorly oxygenated blood
Salt Therapy can help with the treatment and prevention of spreading of Pneumonia through the inhalation of salt particles that reduce and dehydrate the bacteria or virus. The salt’s natural inflammatory properties can reduce the congestion and the production of sputum. The salt molecules attach to the cilia fibers allowing the mucous to dry up reducing bacteria and providing relief from coughing, wheezing and general tightness across the chest.
Pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease that occurs when lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred, and thickens the tissue around and between the air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs making it more difficult for oxygen to pass into your bloodstream for your lungs to work properly and breath. The scarring of the lung tissue cannot be repaired.
Symptoms:
- Shortness of breath
- A dry cough
- Fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
- Aching muscles and joints
- Widening and rounding of the tips of the fingers or toes (clubbing)
Salt Therapy can help with the treatment of Pulmonary fibrosis by reducing inflammation and congestion of the scar tissue formation when inhaled, reduing the production of bacteria and inflammation which are often present in secondary respiratory infections.
Sinusitis is the swelling or inflammation of the tissue lining the sinuses. When sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, bacteria can grow and cause infections.
Symptoms:
- Stuffy nose
- Reduced sense of taste or smell
- Headache
- Fever
- Tooth pain
- Cough that produces mucous
- Yellow or greenish discharge from the nose
- Mucus running down the back of the throat
Salt Therapy can be beneficial for the treatment of Sinusitis through the salt particles that are inhaled thereby reducing the production of bacteria which causes inflammation and congestion in the nasal and sinus cavities.
Snoring is a vibration caused by the obstructions of air movement while breathing when sleeping and can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Symptoms:
- Soft to Loud wheezing during sleep
- Waking with a dry sore throat
- Waking up feeling unrested
- Periods of gasping during sleep
Salt therapy can reduce localised inflammation of airways which in turn can reduce the gasp or wheeze while sleeping as well as relieve congestion, along with reducing the dry sore throat from snoring upon waking.
Skin
Acne is skin condition that causes spots and pimples, on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms. Whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, cysts, and nodules are all types of acne. Glands produce oil and are stimulated by male hormones produced by the adrenal glands in both males and females, causing acne. Acne is not dangerous, but it can leave scars.
Salt Therapy can assist sufferers of acne by increasing the body’s ability to absorb microscopic salt particles via the skin. Salt is a natural antihistamine, antibacterial and anti inflammatory and balances the body’s Ph levels. Salt increases the regenerative process of the skin while reducing the localised inflammation resulting in improvements in the skin’s protective properties.
Dermatitis is a group of diseases that results in inflammation of the skin characterized by itchiness, red skin and a rash.
Dermatitis includes:
- Atopic dermatitis
- Allergic contact dermatitis
- Irritant contact dermatitis
- Stasis dermatitis
Salt therapy can assist sufferers of dermatitis and increase the body’s ability to absorb microscopic salt particles via the skin. Salt is a natural antihistamine, antibacterial and anti inflammatory and balances the body’s Ph levels and can be beneficial for the skin.
Eczema (Atopic dermatitis) is a condition that can make skin red and itchy, that is common in children but can occur at any age. Eczema is chronic and may be accompanied by asthma or hay fever, flaring up periodically.
Symptoms of Eczema may include:
- Severe itching,
- Red patches of skin
- Inflamed and painful skin
- Extremely dry, thickened, cracked or scaly skin
- Raw, sensitive, swollen skin from scratching
Salt therapy can assist sufferers of eczema by absorbing microscopic salt particles via the skin. Salt is a natural antihistamine, antibacterial and anti inflammatory and balances the body’s Ph levels. Salt Therapy can improve the skin’s protective properties and increase the superficial bacterial flora (the good bacteria).
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells causing cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin. The extra skin cells form scales and red patches that are itchy and sometimes painful.
Symptoms:
- Red patches of skin covered with thick, silvery scales
- Small scaling spots (commonly seen in children)
- Dry, cracked skin that may bleed
- Itching, burning or soreness
- Thickened, pitted or ridged nails
- Swollen and stiff joints
Salt Therapy can help by balancing the body’s Ph levels and increasing the regenerative process of the skin which can reduce localised inflammation. Salt therapy increases the body’s ability to absorb microscopic salt particles via the skin. Salt is a natural antihistamine, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory increasing skin elasticity and can result in improvements in the skin’s protective properties and increase the superficial bacterial flora (the good bacteria). Private sessions are available for those wanting to remove larger items of clothing.
